What is a LOLER inspection?

A LOLER inspection is a thorough examination of lifts and other lifting equipment required by the UK Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. It’s carried out by a Competent Person (independent of routine maintenance) to confirm the equipment is safe, fit for purpose, and compliant.

Who needs it?

Duty holders for workplaces and landlord/communal areas (e.g., shops, hotels, care homes, offices, apartment blocks). Private home–only lifts aren’t usually in scope, but periodic checks are still strongly recommended.

Note: This is not routine maintenance — both LOLER and maintenance are required.

What you receive

A written Report of Thorough Examination (ROTE) stating:

Keep reports and logbooks; schedule the next due date and act on remedials promptly.
